In response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Michigan and restrictions that impact the funeral profession, Michigan Funeral Directors Association (MFDA) recommends consumers consider the following:

  • Funeral professionals help families deal with crisis and loss every day while ensuring public safety by properly handling human remains.
  • Michigan funeral directors must adhere to federal, state and local guidance, including Executive Order 2020-11 (COVID-19) restricting gatherings to 50 peopler per comman space, and are committed to accomplishing this while still meeting the needs of greiving families.
  • When planning services for a loved one while adhering to current guidelines, MFDA recommends families consider compiling funeral guest lists, issuing invatations, holding smaller services for immediate family members, and delaying large funeral events when practicable. Many funeral homes offer webcast services so extended family and friends can still pay their respects and participate remotely in celebrations services.
  • If you exhibit symptoms or have reason to believe you have been exposed - do not attend a public gathering of any size.
  • Practice social distancing when seated and during visitation.
  • Wash your hands before entering the funeral home, upon entering the funeral home, and before leaving the funeral home. Liberally utilize hand sanitizer.
