Obituary for Betty L. Jones

Betty Lorraine (Cross) Jones of Delta Twp. passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the age of 97. She was the first born of three daughters to Leon E. Cross and Geteau G. Hilts of Mt Pleasant, MI, as a child the family moved to Lansing, were she attended Eastern High School, before graduating from Central High School.
Betty met and married Robert Jones. She and Robert were married 57 years until his death; they lived on Canal Road in Delta Township for 54 years. In retirement she enjoyed traveling, painting, writing, genealogy, her herbs garden and putting on presentations to garden clubs.
During her lifetime, Betty met five presidents: Wendell Willkie, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. Betty was the oldest living female air raid warden and one of the first women in Michigan.
Betty was very active in the “political life”, having served eight years as a trustee for Delta Township; was the first female elected Eaton County Board Commissioner; also was Vice-President Michigan Federation of Republicans, and co-chairmen of the “Goldwater for President” committee in Michigan. She was awarded the “Minuteman Award” for promoting Michigan and the “Fitzgerald Award” for her lifetime service to the Republican Party. In 2007 she was presented with the “Anniversary Award” for over 50 years of her contribution to Delta Township. Betty was a woman before her time
Betty served on the Board of Directors of St. Vincent Home of Children, Tri-County Mental Health, and Tri-County Office on Aging; member of Eaton County Parks and Recreation board, Delta Township Parks and Recreation, and Delta Township Zoning Board of Appeals. Also, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Charter Member of Seven Island Chapter of American Business Women (ABWA), Grand Ledge Garden Club, Charter member of Ledge Craft Lane Ltd., Charter member of the Eastern Star; past Girl Scout Leader, volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels, and a Welcome Wagon Representative. She was a local historian of all things Delta, Eaton County and Michigan. Betty was a writer for the Grand Ledge Independent for over 20 years. Her column, “Under Betty’s Bonnet” was judged as one of the best original columns appearing in a weekly Michigan weekly newspaper.
Betty is survived by her loving family, Sister Doryce Verhougstraete; four daughters: Janice (Jeff) Vedder- Whipple, Jenine (Jim) Smith, Leigh (Joe) Young, and Katherine (Jon) Broker. Grandchildren: Fritz (Becky) Vedder, Erich (Tiffany) Vedder, Lori (Jeff) Adcock, Staci Smith, Leslie (Bobby) Burton, Lisa Chandler and Joel (Karen) Smith, Ben Broker and Mallory Clark, and 15 great- grandchildren. She is preceded in death her husband Robert, Sister Donna McKeen.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 201 E. Jefferson Street, Grand Ledge, MI. The family wants to thank the staff of Delta Retirement and Hospice of Lansing. In lieu of flower donation in Betty’s name to: SIREN Eaton Shelter, P.O.
