Obituary for Carmen Iola Rothermel

CARMEN BRAKEL ROTHERMEL, a longtime resident of Traverse City, left this earth on September 13, 2019, in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Carmen (Brakel) was born the youngest of five children of Frank and May (Blem) Brakel. She was born on April 17, 1919, having celebrated her 100th birthday this year. Her siblings, William, Tracy, Francis and Ruth, have all gone before her. Carmen grew up on the family farm which was formerly located on US 31, just south of town. She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1936 and received her RN degree from the Traverse City State Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1940. Carmen joined the Army Nurse Corps in early 1941 where she served until 1943, as 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to the hospitals in Ft. Dix, New Jersey, and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
Carmen married Fred Miller Rothermel on November 11, 1942, having met while serving in the US Army in Ft. Bragg. After celebrating 54 years of marriage, Fred preceded her in death on August 5, 1997. She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Joanne) and Richard (Gloria Hackett), four grandchildren, Kristin (John) Pilant, Mark (Kelly) Rothermel, Scott Rothermel and Carrie Doss, and seven great grandchildren.
Once she and Fred were expecting their first child, Carmen was required to leave the military. She returned to Traverse City to live while she waited for Fred to return from his military service in WWII in England, Europe and Pacific theaters. He passed through the Panama Canal at the same time of the Japanese surrender.
Carmen and Fred lived a short time in Pennsylvania, but the family spent most of their years in Traverse City. While raising her two sons Carmen continued to work part time as a nurse at Munson Hospital from 1952 to 1972. They were active members of the Evangelical United Methodist Church. Carmen enjoyed her family, homemaking, helping others, writing thoughtful letters to friends and family, and in retirement, travel and wintering in Florida. She later established the Fred M. and Carmen B. Rothermel Nursing Scholarship fund which has, for the past ten years, funded over 20 scholarships to students at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.
Carmen will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a caring and loving Christian to her many friends. She lived a beautiful life and will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held on September 28, 2019, at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Northwestern Michigan College Nursing Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were entrusted to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
