Obituary for David D. Odom

David D. Odom, 93, formerly of Lansing, MI, passed away May 6, 2017 in Grand Ledge, MI. He was born December 25, 1923 in Hickory, KY, son of the late Arthur and Nona (Mullins) Odom. Dave graduated from high school in Mayfield, KY, where he played football and was the captain of the basketball team. , Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army in Battery A, 226th Searchlight Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion. Upon returning home on leave he married his wife Dorothy Hastings in 1943. He was promoted to Sergeant and was twice decorated with Bronze Stars, and then honorably discharged in 1946. When moving to Lansing he was hired by Oldsmobile and after 35 years of service he retired in 1980 as Quality Director of Lansing. Dave and Dorothy were affectionately known as “Paw & Maw” by all their friends and family. After retirement, they spent their summers on Manistee Lake in Kalkaska and winters in Bonita Springs, FL. Dave loved to fish, garden and golf. He played on two golf leagues until he was 86 years old. Paw was a kind and gentle southern gentleman who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Jackie L. (Gary) Salisbury of Wacousta; grandchildren: Michael D. (Heidi Johnson) Kohon of Grand Ledge, Emily J. (Wyatt) Holes of Lansing, and Mike S. (Amy) Salisbury of Husonville, MI; great-grandchild, Lina Salisbury, and 2 sisters-in-law Esther Dean Odom and Kennon Hatt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy in 2013, brothers and sisters: Berthol (Truman) Odom, Lucille (Bernice) Moses, Aldon (Evalina) Odom, Gladys (Cliff) Greer, John Odom, Kathleen (J.W.) Ivy, Bob (Mildred) Odom, and Henry Odom.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 – 11:00 a.m. at the Wacousta Community United Methodist Church, 9180 Herbison Road, Eagle, MI 48822, with Rev. Hillary Thurston-Cox and Rev. Terri Bentley officiating. Interment at Wacousta Cemetery, Watertown Twp., Clinton Co. Visitations will be held on Tuesday from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Wacousta Community United Methodist Church (WCUMC) or Eaton Community Palliative Care.
