Obituary for Donald Lee Irish

Donald Lee Irish, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully Thursday March 21, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Don was 84 years old.

Don was born on October 12, 1934 in Lansing, MI to Lyla and Dorr Irish. He was an energetic student at Eastern High School (Lansing, MI) while involved in many sports he settled on his passion excelling on the Baseball team. After graduating from Eastern, Don enlisted in the National Guard, was honorably discharged in March of 1954 and continued his service to this nation with the United States Marine Corps from 1954 through 1957. Don was honorably discharged in March of 1957 as a Sergeant last stationed at the Headquarters Company, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division out of Camp LeJeune. He continued his interest in baseball and throughout his service he was still able to participate on Marine Corp recreational baseball teams.

In the fall of 1957 Don met the love of his life, Kay Lesnieski. They were married in May of 1958 and started their journey of 61 years together. Don retired from Michigan State University as the Recreation Manager at the Student Union, he also served many years as the Coach of the MSU Bowling team - and has been a lifelong devout Spartan fan.

Don was a strong patriarch of his family, a good friend to all; a man who would give his shirt for a friend. He was a good and loving husband and father who always took care of his children and did the best he could to teach and guide them. Don was an avid reader, he loved lounging poolside at his home in Florida, fishing, playing Euchre, spending valuable time with his family – you would find him in the stands at every school function. Don’s sense of humor and quick wit was infectious; he was a gentle kind soul and lived life to the fullest.

He is preceded in death by parents; Dorr and Lyla Irish, brother Richard (Norma) Irish, brother-in-law Timothy Lesnieski and Great Granddaughter Andreah Mitchell.
