Obituary for Edward E. Pekrul

Edward Emil Pekrul, 91, was the 6th of 8 children born to Emil Daniel and Adelhaide (“Lena” Getz) Pekrul. Born September 21, 1925 in Lansing, MI, Ed passed away July 14, 2017 in Holt, MI. He attended Holt High School, and was a graduate of the class of 1944. Shortly after his 18th birthday during his senior year he was drafted into the U.S. Army. First semester exams were taken early, and he reported to boot camp in late December, earning second semester credits through written reports. Ed served under Patton in the European theatre of WWII, crossing the Atlantic on the George Washington, the same ship that brought his mother to America in 1911. He was a lifetime member of Lansing VFW Post 701.
Ed’s profession was masonry, and he was a foreman for Lawrence Masonry and J&J Mason Contractors. He was recognized for his brick design of the MSU Planetarium, and oversaw many masonry building projects in mid-Michigan, including Plymouth Congregational Church of Lansing, where he was a member at the time. He served as a trustee for Brick Layers Local 31, and was a member of the Michigan Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union.
Confirmed as a teenager, Ed was a member of Emanuel First Lutheran Church in Lansing. He loved nothing more than family get-togethers, and enjoyed outdoor activities and traveling.
Survivors include his daughter: Dr. Penny Kaye (William) Draper, and grand-daughters, Paige
Draper and Josselin (Chris) Silva; son Mark (Mary Kay) Pekrul, and grandsons Mark (Stephanie) and Matthew (Kelly); and son Eric (Betsy Alles) Pekrul; 5 great-grandchildren, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife, June Marie Piche Fahlen, and his siblings and their spouses: Augusta (Claude) Easley, Daniel (Mildred) Pekrul, Gustav (Suzannne) Pekrul, Bertha Patton, Olga (Clare) Sauve, Julius (Virginia) Pekrul, and Rudolph (Marlene) Pekrul.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel First Lutheran Church, 1001 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, MI 48906 with Pastor Paul Lindloff officiating (visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. at the church). Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
