Obituary for Gary R. Edlin

Committed to love of family, a strong work ethic and giving back to his community, Gary Edlin passed away on September 16, 2019, just two days before his 75th birthday. Gary was born in Belding, MI on September 18, 1944. His parents were Charles and Ruth (Potter) Edlin. Raised on the family farm, Gary experienced firsthand the work ethic and commitment involved in being a part of a job well done, an example he carried and professed with him through life. After graduating from Ionia High School, Gary worked for GM at the Fisher Body Plant in Lansing as a skilled tradesman for 42 years and was one of the last to leave the plant before it was closed.

At work, or in the Grand Ledge Community, Gary was recognized and known for his handle bar mustache! He loved volunteering for Grand Ledge Sports throughout his life at all levels, coaching and helping on the sidelines. He was involved with basketball, baseball and football to support his sons, Jeff and Chris and then for his grandchildren. Gary became well known as Cam’s, Lauren’s and Nate’s grampa!! Whether volunteering or coaching, he lived to be their biggest fan and “coach”! He cheered on his Seattle granddaughters as well through visits and FaceTiming to support and encourage them in their interests.

Gary also enjoyed woodworking, showing his Golden Retrievers and hunting. In 2003, he claimed a Boone and Crockett record elk in Colorado that is fondly referred to by the grand children as Bullwinkle because of its enormous size!

Gary met his wife, Sue Harkness in High School. They were friends for 58 years and married for 53 years. Throughout their lives together, Sue and Gary have traveled to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Canada and many US states including New York, Maine, Washington, Florida, Colorado, and their favorite Kentucky. Vacations included skiing in Colorado, a working cattle ranch, a draft horse driving school and weekends at the cottage for a rest. You could also find Sue and Gary at MSU Football Games and cheering on the Lady Spartan Basketball Team!

This kind, generous, sensitive and caring man will be so very much missed by his wife Sue, his sons Jeff and friend Tammy, Chris (Elly), Karen Edlin, Grand kids: Cameron, Lauren, Nathan, Winnie and Zephyr, sister Charlene (Mark) Shaltz and many cousins, friends and his Golden Retriever Izz.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 12 to 3 pm at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, 301 E. Jefferson Street, Grand Ledge 48837. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that a donation of your choice be made to Grand Ledge Football, Grand Ledge Softball or the Lady Comet Basketball Team. These were Gary’s wishes for the teams he supported and loved. Online condolences may be shared at www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com
