Obituary for Gloria E. Stephens

On Mother’s Day, May 12, 2019, Gloria Eleanor Stephens passed on from this life. Gloria was born on December 22, 1925 in Bedford, Indiana. She was the second of five children born to Hebert and Eleanor Starr. She was preceded in death by her older brother William R. Starr, her sister Oweetah Starr, her brother H. James Starr and her parents, Hebert and Eleanor Starr. Her late husband, Rev. Douglas R. Stephens, the love of her life, passed away on January 17, 2011.

Gloria’s family moved to Lansing, Michigan during her childhood and she was a graduate of Eastern High School. She attended Western Michigan University and then transferred to Michigan State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948. During college she worked as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell and following her graduation she was offered a position as a buyer for a large retail business in Chicago. She declined that offer so she could devote her life to her husband and family, and to the church.

Gloria is survived by her best and dearest friend, her sister Phyllis Cornell. Their bond was unbreakable and provided joy and comfort throughout their life. This bond was a gift to their children who always enjoyed the luxury of having “two mothers”, each of which would go to bat for any of them in a moment’s notice. Gloria is also survived by her oldest son, Rev. David D. Stephens (wife Kathryn) of Lansing, Senior Pastor of Life Christian Church in Lansing and the Liberty Church of Grand Ledge, MI; son Daniel N. Stephens (wife Deborah) of DeWitt, and son Robert S. Stephens (wife Elaine) of Grand Ledge, and daughter Carla S. Compton of Orange County, CA. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren: Nathanael and David James Stephens, Benjamin Compton and Justin Bascom, Andrea Stephens, Victoria Compton, April Fisher, and Alicia Montoya, and 6 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and countless members of her church family.

Gloria was a partner in the life of her husband, Rev. Douglas R. Stephens and could be described as a co-founder of the First United Pentecostal Church in Grand Ledge, MI, founded in May of 1963, now known as The Liberty Church.
She was absolutely devoted to her husband of 62 years and he was smitten by and devoted to her beyond any question. Their life together was a blessing to them and many others.

Loyalty, honesty, reliability and consistency were principals that Gloria lived by. Following those principals, she faithfully published the state church newspaper, ‘The Michigan District News’ for over 30 years.

Gloria was rock solid in her faith and read her Bible daily. She was a prayer warrior and most of her prayers were answered favorably. Gloria was a persistent, loyal and reliable friend and ally; committed to her faith to the end. Gloria was committed to caring for everyone and most particularly to the “least of us”, consistent with the message of Jesus Christ. She never wavered in her beliefs and her concern for others in need.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at The Liberty Church, 12745 Georgia Ave., Grand Ledge, followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Ledge. Visitation will held at the church Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday from 12 – 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Liberty Church or make a donation to a charity of choice in memory of Gloria Stephens. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com
