The Honorable Thaddeus Casimir Stopczynski (Ted), loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and former State Representative of the State of Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on September 14, 2017 surrounded by his loving wife, all 12 of his children, and family members.
Ted was born February 16th, 1940 to Stephen and Cassie Stopczynski in Hamtramck, MI and grew up with his parents and brothers Stephen and Stanley. Ted went to school and served as an altar boy at St. Augustine Parish in Detroit. At St. Augustine school, Ted first met his bride-to-be, Judy Drost.
Ted and Judy were married October 10th, 1959 at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores. Ted and Judy began a family and together raised 12 children at their home in Detroit. During that time, they also welcomed and opened their home to 11 foreign exchange students. The family attended Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck where the children attended school.
As a State Representative of the State of Michigan, Ted served in the Michigan House of Representatives with distinction from 1973 to 1982. Prior to serving in the State House, Ted served as a Detroit Police Officer from 1962 to 1973, and as Chairman of Detroit School Board Region 6. After his term in the Michigan House of Representatives, Ted served as Director of Legislative Liaison for the Michigan State Police from 1983 to 2002, before retiring in 2002.
Ted and Judy moved from Detroit to Grand Ledge, Michigan in 1987, where they were members of St. Patrick Church in Portland and St. Gerard in Lansing. After moving to Grand Ledge, the younger children continued their education at various schools in the Portland and Grand Ledge area. Ted was a 3rd Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council #2168 in Portland, Michigan and a member of the 4th Degree Assembly #1509 in Westpahlia. He was a former member of the Polish Century Club in Detroit.
Ted spent a portion of his retirement years with Judy in The Villages, Florida, where they have many wonderful friends and are members of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Ted enjoyed many days in the beautiful Florida sunshine with Judy, and especially enjoyed bowling, playing golf, table tennis and pinochle with friends. They have kept their home in Grand Ledge and returned often for holidays, visits with friends, and family events including the annual Stopczynski ‘Barn Party’ in northern Michigan. Ted also enjoyed poker nights and hunting camp with his sons and friends.
Ted is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Judith Evelyn (Drost) Stopczynski, his brother, the Honorable Stanley Stopczynski (Donna), 12 children, 11 foreign exchange student children, 33 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He is the loving father of 12 children: Suzanne Wokuluk (Paul), Peggy Dumas (Clayton), Lawrence Stopczynski (Jill), GregoryStopczynski (Julie), Judith Wright (Richard), Matthew Stopczynski (Denise), Timothy Stopczynski, Elizabeth Stopczynski, Rebecca Mariage (David) , Thaddeus Stopczynski (April), Johnathon Stopczynski (Brooke), and Andrew Stopczynski.
He is the loving father of 11 foreign exchange students from Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Phillipines and South America: Ximena, Alicia, Jutta, Roberto, Rosa, David Sr., Aki, Jun, Carmen, David Jr., and Adolfo.
He is the loving grandfather of 33 grandchildren: Paul Jr., Stephen, Charles, David, Darrin (Stefani), Paige, Aaron, Jamie, Joseph, Chelsey, Cassie, Brendan, Nicole K., Ryan, Nicole W., Danielle (Kurt), Brandon, Joshua, Bryanne, Amber, Katelyn, Dallas, Brittni, Jacob, Bryson, Adrianna, Keagan, Ashley, Hunter, Caleb, Kenadeigh, Summer, and an expected grandchild in January.
He is the loving great grandfather of 5 great-grandchildren: Nolan, Harper, Jaxson, Evelyn, and an expected great grandchild this month.
Ted was preceded in death by his father, The Honorable Stephen Stopczynski, mother Cassie Stopczynski, and brother Stephen Stopczynski.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917, with Father John Kline as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Westphalia, MI. Receiving of family and friends will be held Sunday 3-7 p.m. and Monday 3-8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, 301 E. Jefferson St., Grand Ledge, MI 48837. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Council #2168 Portland or the 4th Degree Assembly #1509 Westphalia, Parkinson’s Foundation, or American Lung Assoc.
