Obituary for James Paul Lipkowitz

James (Jim) Lipkowitz was born November 1, 1945 in Lansing, Michigan to Stephen and Margaret Lipkowitz. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1964 and from Ferris State in 1968, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and earned a B.S. degree in business. From 1968 to 1974 Jim served in the National Guard Artillery Unit.

Jim, his father and brother John; from what once was their farm, built an 18 hole golf course, The Grand Ledge Country Club. Jim became the manager of the course in 1970 and a member of the Professional Golfer's Association in 1973, eventually becoming a Life Member of the PGA. Every 4th of July the club celebrates its original opening date along with the National holiday by sponsoring a charity golf tournament. After 62 years the GLCC continues to be a community landmark and the site of many charity events and weddings. Ann Bernloehr, an accomplished artist, became Jim’s wife in life and partner in the business when in 1977 they purchased the course. Not only did Jim run the course and keep the grounds in beautiful condition, he, out of necessity, developed an unparalleled understanding of machines and motors, often building new parts in his workshop.

Jim was a mentor to many young adults and a loyal, encouraging employer. He developed friendships through many hobbies where his creativity and craftsmanship were admired. He was an avid hunter rarely missing a shot, a fisherman who could tie his own flies, a model train builder and hobby of remote controlled planes. He was also a member of the Shriners.

He will be missed by many friends and family, especially his wife, Ann; brother John; niece, Jenny Lipkowitz Talliadors; nephews, Adrian Kaylor and Landon Bernloehr; step-nephew David Nice, brother-in-law Bruce (Sandy) Bernloehr, sister-in-law Carolyn (Michael) Insler; Best Man, Tom Willming, who was at his side hunting, fishing and listening, and former roommate and dear friend, Jim Wilson.

Out of respect and concern for public health and safety, the family has chosen to postpone services. A memorial service will be held and announced at a later date. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Association, or International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, 6144 Clark Center Ave, Sarasota, FL 34238 941-927-4963 in memory of James Lipkowitz. The family is being served by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com
