Obituary for Jane Lynn Hull

Jane Lynn Hull, 71, of Delta Mills and Grand Ledge, MI, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Born Jane Lynn Berghuis September 19, 1945 to Melvin Earl and Barbara Jane Berghuis in Grand Rapids, MI. She was the second of three children: an older brother, Robert Earl Berghuis, and a younger brother, David Melvin Berghuis. Grew up on Radcliffe St. within sight of the campus of Calvin College. Father Melvin was a professor and later Dean of Students at Calvin. Mother Barbara worked as a nurse. Members of the Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Attended Sylvan Christian School and Grand Rapids Christian High School. Attended Calvin College and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Letters and Medical Technology. Married William Sanford Hull V on August 3, 1968 in Grand Rapids, MI. Gave birth to a son, William Sanford Hull VI on April 1, 1973 in Lansing, MI. Gave birth to a son, James Robert Hull on June 13, 1980 in Lansing, MI. Moved to a farm in Delta Mills, MI in 1977.

In addition to working part- and full-time as a laboratory technician at E.W. Sparrow hospital for 40 years, Jane loved to pour her energies into caring for numerous animals – ponies, horses, goats, turkeys, cats and dogs, rabbits, and a large house full of egg-laying hens. She was known to many neighbors as the “Egg Lady” and continued to sell the large, brown eggs for $1 a dozen for years after inflation had driven the price in stores to double and quadruple that. She and her husband Bill loved to garden, and cultivated at least 6 major gardens – some flower, some vegetable. They had orchards, too, and she canned and preserved several hundred jars of fruit, soups, salsas, jams, and jellies each harvest season.
Starting in the mid-1980s, she began to attend Delta Mills United Methodist Church. She continued on as an active member of that congregation through to the present, participating in missions committees, singing in the choir with her son Jim, hosting monthly dinners for senior citizen members who had lost spouses, and by supporting the effort to prevent the closing and consolidation of the church during the early 2000s.
In the mid-1980s, she and Bill purchased land in Kalkaska County, MI and together built a second home that was used or the next 25 years as a winter destination for family trips to ski, snowmobile, and enjoy the beauty of the Great North.
She loved to sit on the back porch facing west in the evenings, listening to the summer crickets or Prairie Home Companion on Saturdays, as she shelled peas, shucked corn, and peeled tomatoes, eyeing the barn cat that rubbed at her legs with suspicion, but also tenderness.
Each year since childhood, she attempted to wade into Lake Michigan before Memorial Day, prevented only a small number of times, sometimes by ice!
After retiring from the laboratory at Sparrow hospital in 2010, she began to volunteer at the used book store operated by the Delta Charter Township branch library. She also devoted her time and energies to attending regular auctions and cultivating a fine collection of antiques and memorabilia from her childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. She and husband Bill regularly ran a booth at the Allegan antique festival and other local gatherings and sold antiques as a means of staying active.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents Mel and Barbara, brother Bob, and niece Lindsay. She is survived by husband Bill, Son William (B.J.) and wife Teri of Lansing, MI, Son James (Jim) and wife Caitlin, grandson Vance William and granddaughter Eleanor Jane, all of Irvine, California, Brother David Melvin and wife Judy and their daughter Stephanie, husband Josh, and great nephew Jackson Thomas, all of Yarmouth, Maine; Sister-in-Law Nancy Downs and husband Mel Downs, of Lakeside, MI; Sister-in-Law Pamela Behnke of Roscommon, MI; Niece Kym Herod, and husband Bill, of Lakeside, MI; Nephew Richard Anton Novacek III, partner Julie Monaghan, and great niece Molly Grace, of New Buffalo, MI; Mother-in-law Helen Ruiter, of Arizona; 21 cousins, including Kathy Prins, Nancy Bush, and Julie Johnson.; also friends at Sparrow Hospital and Delta Mills UMC.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Sparrow Home Hospice, Visiting Angels, and caring and generous neighbors, friends, coworkers, and members of the local congregation for their steadfast support and continued gestures of goodwill, especially in her final days.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 22nd at Delta Mills United Methodist Church, 6809 Delta River Drive, Lansing, MI 48906.
