Obituary for Janet L. Hoyt

Janet Lucinda Hoyt, age 96, of Grand Ledge Michigan passed away January 14, 2020. She was born January 17, 1923 to Fred and Sarah Marvin. She graduated from Battle Creek High School and went to East Lansing to get her degree in dietetics at Michigan State University. She married William Tedford Hoyt on March 2, 1945 after Ted returned home from World War II.
Janet and Ted made a home for their growing family in many places including Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and back to Michigan. After raising a family, Janet and Ted enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing, gardening, and traveling in the U.S. They also took a trip to Mexico for their 25th wedding anniversary and to Sierra Leon, West Africa to visit their son, Fred in the Peace Corp.
After being widowed in 1984, Janet continued to work part time at the People’s Church and was very active at Disciples Church of Christ in Lansing. When she was not playing bridge, she was helping and leading church committees or volunteering at Sparrow hospital. She received her 25 year award at Sparrow. She also was a member of P.E.O. Janet had a heart for people. She loved to cook and serve others. No one ever left her home without something tasty to eat.
In her later years, Janet was a big Michigan State fan and could tell you all of the football and basketball player’s names. She was an avid reader and could complete crossword puzzles from the paper with ease. Once in a while she said she cheated and looked up an answer. She enjoyed trips with her friends and with her sister in law and brother in law Don and Millie Coffman. Her niece, Julie Perry became one of her closest friends.
Janet was proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Stephen (Pam) Hoyt, Carol (Tim O’Brien) Squibb, Roger (Karen) Hoyt, Fred (JoEllen) Hoyt, Sarah (Eric) Bosh, and Lucinda (Bill) Wilkinson; sister Priscilla Marvin, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years Ted Hoyt, her parents, sister and husband, Marianna and Jack Salyers, nephew Mike Perry, and great grandson Malachi Chance.
