Obituary for Janice Marie Hines

Janice Marie (Becker) Hines died on December 2, 2020 after a valiant battle against the COVID-19 virus, the pandemic of 2020. A sad irony is that Janice’s maternal grandfather died in the 1918 pandemic.

Janice was born December 18, 1933 to Clifford and Mary Becker in Gould City, Michigan. Jan grew up and graduated high school in 1951 in Newberry. She was a staunch Catholic who believed in God as her Father in heaven.

Janice married Daniel J. Hines (predeceasing her in 2009) in 1953 and had five loving children who will greatly miss her: Susan (Andy) Craig; Patricia Hines; Jane (Ron) Millbrook; Daniel Hines; and Lisa (Lee) Wilson. She is also survived by grandchildren Brandon Craig, Andrea (Stan) McCulloch, Dustin Craig, Stacey Courter, Samantha Millbrook, Jessica Hines, and Dylan Hines; and her beloved great-grandchildren Chloe, Trevinn, and Chase, who called her “Old Navy” (which always made her smile). Her only sister Bett (Garry) Bauer resides in Milwaukee.

Jan lived all over the state of Michigan and travelled the globe with her late husband after retiring from the Sears store in Lansing. Her happiest times were when she was (re)visiting the Upper Peninsula. She leaves behind a treasure trove of friends and relatives from one end of the United States to the far reaches of the UP. Jan’s “Aunt” Ellen meant the world to her, who she longed to see or talk to almost every day; and when they were apart, Jan was making plans for her next visit to see her beloved “Aunt” Ellen.

Shopping was as much a social event as a necessary one. Until the pandemic, nothing could stop Jan from going and doing something almost every day. She never met a stranger she didn’t like. She would stop to chat with almost anyone who smiled at her and then counted them as a friend. Jan loved to meet her friends and family at a restaurant for catching up and enjoying a meal out.

Jan bragged that she was a “good driver” and so, that’s what she did. Taking a Sunday drive around home with a friend or family member was always a treat, and until as recently as last summer, she would drive from Grand Ledge to the UP at least a couple times every year. She never tired of the UP, its beauty, her family and friends, and the fond memories she found in almost every niche of the peninsula.

Due to the virus, a celebration of Jan’s life will be postponed until a later date. She would want everyone to Wear a Mask!, Stay Healthy!! and Safe!!!
