Obituary for John S. Higgins

John Sheridan Higgins, was born June 19, 1931 to Vivian I. Higgins in Middleboro, MA. He passed away February 10, 2020 in Holt, MI due to complications associated with Parkinson's Disease. He was adopted by his maternal grandfather, John Milton Higgins, as a child. He was a faithful Baptist Christian. He grew up in Brockton in the care of his aunts and grandfather, and graduated from the Farm and Trades School on Thompson's Island in Boston Harbor. He was very athletic at the School, as a football quarterback including the 1947 undefeated season, basketball, baseball, track & field, shotput, high jump, broad jump, tennis (where he beat his coach once), and the 3-mile run (where he always placed first). He played trumpet or tuba in the School band where they also played at Faneuil Hall in Boston each year.
He met and married Lorraine Franzen, then was drafted to serve in the Korean War. John and Lorraine were married for 59 years. Lorraine preceded John in death in 2012.
John loved vacationing with his family in Eastham on Cape Cod, MA where his ancestors landed.
John worked at HP Hood & Sons (E. Bridgewater & Charlestown, MA), VA Hospital (Brockton, MA) and Pinkerton in MA & Lansing, MI to support his growing family.
He loved to sing at Holt Senior Care, where he was a resident for nearly nine years.
He leaves five daughters: Marilyn (Joseph) Mannino of MI, Diane (Charles) Edson of MA, Pamela (Ronald) Ishimoto of MI, Jean (Brian) McLeod of MI, and Jane (Peter) Lindsay of NC, seven grandchildren: Miranda & Joseph Mannino, of MI, Noel, Jr. (Cindie) Mendes of CA & Christopher (Andrea) Mendes of CA, Jennifer, Jessica, Jerrilyn McLeod, and three great grandchildren: Oliver, Jackson & Vivian Mendes, of CA. Special mention of his nephew Bobby (Mary Jane) Hoffman of MA, that he called “son.”
John's family would like to thank Dr. John Goudreau DO, PhD, April Morris, RN, MS & Denise Van Etten, RN, all at MSU, for guiding Dad through his Parkinson’s journey, Holt Senior Care staff (especially nurses Ashley, John, Courtney, Jenny, and Mary (nights), aides Mary, Oriana, Stephanie, and Maranda, for compassionately caring for our dad.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice, or the local Michigan Parkinson’s awareness program (makingtheturngolf.com) that sponsors a Parkinson’s exercise program of which John had participated.
