Obituary for Mary Louise Larrison

Mary Louise Larrison, 93, of Portland, MI, was called home to her Lord on June 17, 2020. She was born October 3, 1926 in Detroit, MI, daughter of Michael Patrick and Dessie (Killman) Shanahan. Mary attended St. Matthews Grade School, Dominican High School, and went on to attend nurses training at St. Lawrence Nursing School in Lansing, where she worked at Sparrow hospital for over 30 years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Though mom’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled, her joy for life, and her fierce spirit kept her pushing through the pain. Mom was not a boastful person, but she sought the love and acceptance of others and would often engage through a joke or a smile. Her Irish heritage played out through a twinkle in her eye and she often was lovingly reminded to behave herself. She loved to laugh, she was a very fun person, a gentle soul, and her immense compassion made her family cherish her beyond measure. Mom suffered significant losses starting early in her life, and she worked hard to overcome her grief and sadness to become a loving and positive role model.

As part of the greatest generation, Mary had a tremendous work ethic, and did things right the first time. As a young wife, mother, and part-time nurse, she found time to establish her children’s spiritual foundation. Her daughters have vivid memories of a typical Saturday night, and mom preparing for Sunday school and church. Imagine four sets of freshly polished dress shoes drying in the corner, while mom pressed our homemade dresses, and chased four giggling girls to set their hair in rollers, all the time giggling herself after probably working a day at the hospital. This was our mom.
Mary loved gardening, flowers, decorating her home, spending time with family, visiting friends at Sam Corey Senior Center, and her cats Willy and Tilly. Throughout the years, Friday has been girls night with her daughters and will be fondly remembered. An annual weekend was enjoyed each fall to celebrate her birthday with her daughters and granddaughters.

Mary is survived by her daughters: Claudia (Donald) Hartenburg, Marilyn (Thomas) Woodhouse, Karen (Jim) Lang, and Debra (Raymond) Slivensky; 8 grandchildren: Julie, Michael, Lisa, Jason, Jennifer, Jon, Mandy, Joshua, and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William and grandson Ryan Bullion.

A loving thank you to mom’s special friends: Mitzi, Lori, Phyllis, Betty, and Carol, and to the loving and compassionate staff at Premier Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 5740 W. Holt Road, MI 48842, with visitation from 10 – 11 a.m. Interment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Okemos. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church, Capital Area Humane Society, or Premier Hospice. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com
