Obituary for Pauline E. Olmstead

Pauline Evelyn Jenkins was born on November 25, 1923; mother was Luta Ruth Shepard (Schulz) and father Lawrence Samson Jenkins. She grew up in a tiny mid-Michigan village of Assyria Center during the Depression, where family, community and church formed the pillars of her foundation. She was the first born in a second marriage so she enjoyed an expanded family unit of two half-brothers and a half-sister. After high school (class of ’42), she attended the American Bible Institute Seminary in Brooklyn, NY, where she met Hal Stewart Olmstead. After graduation in June 1946, they married and together they set off on a shared pathway of church, family and community. As a young Minister’s Wife and Mother, she dedicated her life to raising their five children. Her early training in accounting and business math came in handy later while still raising their three youngest children she became a key part of the entrepreneurial business/partnership with Hal, managing multiple rental properties, and a dog kennel specializing in three breeds, selling them nationally and internationally through “Dog World” magazine.
She had artistic abilities and aspirations that she never had a chance to pursue or develop. Her creativity manifested itself in many ways. Pauline loved her family and home; she loved fixing it up and decorating it. Everything in our home was crafted with love and purpose. She reveled in the fact that her children shown artistic abilities, each in their own way and took delight in their talents. She lived through them as many parents do. She gave encouragement, advice when needed, and mostly positive reinforcement. She gave us Unconditional Love that we could depend on.
Hal and Pauline demonstrated to us what work hard was every day without complaint. She was firmly focused on her family and their shared mission of providing for their family. They did this exceptionally well. She was very strong in her belief in God in her own quiet way. We watched them go through the painful but necessary process of “downsizing.” It took several years from going from the big house in Eaton Rapids, to smaller houses and still smaller houses, eventually to an apartment. Pauline continued the process without Hal when he “passed” in 2003 by going to a studio apartment in “Assistive Living” and eventually just a “Room.” Each step of the way she made the best of the situation; we decorated making comfort and coziness a priority, filling the space with personal items and photographs, but at each stage sheading more and more items until down to the bare necessities. Hal and Pauling aged gracefully and accepted the process, embraced the eventual reality that this was nature taking its course and they were just travelers on their way.
Later in life the 11 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren came and Pauline loved and cherished each one of them as a new generation and new set of young lives to watch grow and blossom. She lived in Eaton Rapids Michigan for 33 years, from 1969 to 2002. In April 2002 Pauline and Hal moved to Rochester NY to live near their two daughters in Palmyra, and moved into a Senior Living Community in nearby Clifton Springs. Dad died in September 2003 and Pauline proceeded to live with daughter Jannelle and husband Joe for some 13 years. She moved into a nearby Nursing Home in August 2015.
She slipped away from us swiftly and quietly on August 27, 2017 to be with her beloved husband, siblings and parents. We’ll gather together on September 9th to celebrate her life and to remember; to laugh and to cry and hold each other tightly as we say goodbye to Pauline our beloved Mother, Friend and Mentor.
