Obituary for Reverend Wesley J. Priest

Rev. Wesley Jay Priest, 75, of Delta Township, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 7, 2021. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Wesley will be remembered for his beautiful singing voice, fierce devotion to his family and Michigan State University (MSU), but mostly for his love for God. Wesley will always be known as ‘Spike’ by his family and close friends. He was born December 28, 1945 in Lansing, MI, son of the late William Jay and Lila Mae (Downing) Priest. Wesley grew up in Holt and went to Sycamore Grade School, Holt Jr. High, graduating from Holt High School in June 1964. He attended MSU September 1964 to June 1968, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion/Theology.
Wesley married the love of his life and best friend Kathleen R. (Dick) ‘Bubba’ Priest, on March 26, 1965 at Oneida Gospel Church in Grand Ledge. Wesley spent many years sharing his amazing singing voice with others; his voice was truly a gift from God. He was a graduate from the Mount Hope Bible Training Institute in Lansing, attended Berean College in Springfield, MO, and also earned his Certificate of Ordination as an Ordained Minister in the Assemblies of God serving in some form of ministry for over 35 years. After his retirement from the State of Michigan Department of Social Services, Wes and Kathie enjoyed 16 years in Palm Coast, Florida, and in 2019 they moved back to Michigan to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Pastor Wes was happy to serve in the following positions during his time in ministry: Choir Director for Lansing Youth for Christ 1967 to 1970, Music Pastor at Mount Hope Church 1984 to 1996, Jackson Hospital Chaplain 1990 to 1995, Sparrow Hospital Chaplain 1995-2003, Lansing Police Department Chaplain 1994 to 2003, Michigan Department of Corrections Chaplain at Lakeland Prison in Coldwater 1995 to 2003.
