Obituary for Shirley A. Elowski

Shirley August Paul Elowski, age 96, passed quietly in his sleep on Saturday morning August 20, 2016, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Shirley was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he never served overseas as he served with the military police. He guarded prisoners of war (POWs) from both Japan and Germany, serving both in Minnesota and California during the war. He loved reminiscing about his military exploits like; driving a truck full of cash to meet payroll at the base, and the time the brakes went out on the truck on hilly terrain... He always spoke highly of the intelligence of the Japanese prisoners, something he didn't expect!

Shirley was a quiet, self effacing individual, with a great sense of humor, but his demeanor hid his spine of steel; that was likely inherited from his Prussian ancestors, and being raised on a farm during the depression by his hearty Lutheran parents in Presque Isle County.

Shirley moved to Lansing to attend Lansing Business University (LBU); LBU was the precursor of Davenport University. He was a graduate in accounting, he started working in the accounting department of John Bean prior to going into service for his country in the U.S. Army in 1942.

During the 1930's John Bean produced high pressure pumps and fire fighting equipment, at the beginning of WWII, they entered the defense business, making amphibious tractors and tanks for the military. In 1945, Shirley was honorably discharged, when he returned to Lansing to work for 35 years at John Bean. After his retirement the '80's, he started a second career as accountant for Frasier Insurance Company of Grand Ledge.

Shirley loved the out of doors, last summer he cut down 10 trees on his wooded 5 acres, and his plan for this summer was to cut down 5 more... He was an avowed woodworker, often making tables and toy boxes, from the wood he harvested from the trees he had planted and raised. His garden produced prodigiously and many neighbors and Grand Ledge residents were the recipients of bushels of extra tomatoes, corn and zucchini.

Grandpa Elowski will be missed by all his family; three kids: Ronald C. (Peg McComb) Elowski, Ann Marie Elowski and Rebecca S. (John) Tiedt; three grandchildren: Jacob, Benjamin Tiedt and Sean Elowski; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Mertz and Audrey Wenzel, and brother Norman Elowski, and many others in his extended family. Helen Marie (Scribner) Elowski, his wife of 68 years, passed just 18 months ago. Now they are together again. He was also predeceased by his two brothers Howard and Harvey Elowski and sister Mildred Burns.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 W. Saginaw Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917, with Rev. Roger Straub officiating. Military graveside services will follow at Delta Center Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to Sparrow Foundation, Home Hospice Services, 1110 E. Michigan Avenue, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, Michigan 48909 or American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823 in memory of Shirley Elowski.
