Obituary for Gerry G. Wyma

Chaplain Gerry (Gary) George Wyma, age 77, passed away on May 16, 2019 in the comforting arms of his beloved wife, into the loving arms of Jesus. He was born June 30, 1941 in Traverse City, MI and raised in the Grand Rapids area. Gerry was a retired Chaplain for the State of Michigan, Ionia Maximum Security Prison; a former pastor of several churches in Michigan and Minnesota; and worked 13 years for his alma mater, Spring Arbor University, in the Office of Advancement. He was a high school referee for 30 years, a member of the Capital City Corvette Club, an avid landscaper and a diehard University of Michigan football fan. GO BLUE!!! But above all of this he enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was traveling with his wife, relaxing at the cottage with his family, boating and fishing with his grandchildren, or preparing elaborate holiday meals. Family was most important and brought Gerry the most joy.

Gerry will be remembered as a man who made friends easily, who genuinely cared for people, and who loved unconditionally. When he asked how you were doing, you knew he sincerely cared and wanted to know how you were. Gerry's faith was strong and he willingly followed each time the Lord called him and his family into another form of ministry. His obedience to the Lord led to many being blessed by his service and compassion. He poured himself into the people he ministered to and the love of the Lord was evident. His great sense of humor could make anyone smile, even on their worst day. He also enjoyed poking fun at being an avid U of M fan living in Spartan country.

Gerry fought the battle against the degenerative disease, PSP, with
dignity and grace, never complaining about his diminishing physical abilities, instead always concerned how his wife and family were coping with his losses. Through this battle, Gerry continued to minister to others, in spite of his physical struggles.

Gerry is survived by his college sweetheart and loving wife of 53 years, Kathleen, their 3 children: Carrie (Butch) Dashner of Parma, MI, Tor (Sherry) Wyma of Albion, MI, and Amity (Aaron) Zenz of Spring Lake, MI;
11 grandchildren: Kaileen (Derek) McKinney, Logan Dashner, CallyAnne (Clayton) Scott, Benjamin and Victoria Wyma; Isaac, Grace, Lily, Elijah, Evangeline, and Magdalena Zenz, great grandson, Reid McKinney, and brother Richard (Gwen) Wyma. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Verda (Salisbury) Wyma and granddaughter, Eliana Zenz.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors at McLaren ICU for their loving care and support during Gerry's final days. As well as to the professional care staff from Residential Home Care for the many years of loving care and service provided for Gerry and his wife.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 411 Harrison St., Grand Ledge, MI, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to CurePSP or the First United Methodist Church of Grand Ledge, MI in memory of Gerry Wyma. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at
